Osteopathy was founded in 1874 by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, M.D., a former Civil War surgeon.  Dr. Still realized in his research the further understanding of how anatomy influences physiology in human health.  In other words, He was able to advance an understanding of the important role of structure influencing function, in the human body.  His concept became known as Osteopathic Medicine.  He pioneered the application of structural manipulation, so as to permit the body to recover its capacity to restore a healing process, which had been prevented or blocked by disease or injury.  His concept was not confined to spinal manipulation, although he made the first landmark observations on the effects of spinal manipulation.

Today, there are over 64 Osteopathic Medical schools. One third of all medical physicians graduating medical schools are Osteopathic Physicians. All graduates are licensed as "complete" physicians, as are their M.D. counterparts, but have an extra 500 hours of training in Osteopathic theory and practice, including Manipulative treatment.  Beyond this, all of the physicians  in our clinic have even further specialized training, becoming board certified in Neuromusculoskeletal and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, as a stand-alone specialty.  This includes "cranial-sacral" manipulation as well, which is itself an original Osteopathic modality.   We have helped teach courses in the same, to other physicians, including D.O.'s, M.D.'s and Dentists, as well as to Osteopathic students in the schools.
